Ex-11 Is it Goodbye to our Rickshaws?

(Kar) Rickshaws had been discovered at first in Hong Kong in 1874. They were popular public transport in those days. Therefore, there were over than 3,000 ones and about 8,000 rickshaw-pullers in 1920s. However, rickshaws have been replaced by motor vehicle: buses, trams and taxis after the Second War.

Only four remaining rickshaws were licenced to service since 1980s. Instead they became to service tourists. There was the limited route from old Star Ferry Pier to Statue Square area only. Nevertheless, many visitors took photos sitting in a rickshaw at that time. The owners were less hard to earn money then.

But it’s quite difficult for rickshaw-pullers to earn their living since the new terminal where isn’t convenient for visitors. As a result, the remaining rickshaws may disappear soon, and then we will lose the part of our Hong Kong’ heritage. Eventually, they may be exhibited in the Hong Kong history museum.
