Ex-40 Where Can We Hear Good English?

(Kar) It is easy for some people to speak fluent English. However, for me, listening and speaking English are quite hard to do. Therefore, I decide to take an English phonetics course to improve my poor English speaking.

My friend, Billy, who can speak correct English, recently shared with me in his experience of learning English. He said that his English speaking had been poor in the past. Fortunately, his class teacher, who was very kind to all students, encouraged him and his classmates to talk with foreigners so he often brought them to Stanley to interview the tourists here on Sunday. He thought it was a good extracurricular activity for them to improve their English.

Besides, he also took an English phonetics and a conversation course to improve his oral skills. He thought both courses were quite good. Through training, he understood that English uses tones, how to emphasize with right syllables and how to speak English with correct intonation. It was useful that, he could hear someone’s English speaking with right syllables or wrong and was confident to speak with foreigners after the courses.

He often listened to the professional British news- readers on the local English TV Channels. He also watched plenty of English movies and listened to many English songs in his spare time. He thought that it was an opportunity for him to hear good English.

I agree with his views of learning. It is useful for me to improve. I should have a good planning for study.

Ex-39 What does Democracy Really Mean?

(Kar) According to The Basic Law of articles No. 25-26 those permanent residents of the HKSAR, who over the age of eighteen, shall have the right to vote and stand of election in accordance with law.

The age of adulthood is eighteen, the age when young people are qualified to vote. However, some of them are too young to realize the purpose of the candidates and are less mature to judge which candidate is really loyal to all the electorates or to their party.

It is necessary that parents and teachers should explain clearly to the young people that the real mean of democracy. They should also teach them to judge that whether the candidates who are really conscientious, responsible, to all the people or not. And encourage them to keep open minds accepting the views of democratic politicians.

In my opinion, true democracy should be responsible to the voters, listen to the views of others, tolerate different views from other parties and less argue or confront with others in the society. Furthermore, the elected candidates should really represent the voters or the citizens, and support legislation to help all the underprivileged people. Assist the Government to create an egalitarian society.

On the other hand, the electorates should supervise the elected politicians whether they have fulfilled their promises and performed their duties faithfully or not. And observe their purpose if they are to get power for themselves or their party.

Pride!

Ex-38 The Right to Live

(Kar) Nowadays there are plenty of workers who have very hard lives. It is because that they depend upon the poor salaries to support their families for other expenses such as paying the rent, bills, educational fee and local traffic fares and so on.

The Legislative Councillor, Emily Lau, recently pointed out that there are 190,000 households under HK$4,000 per month. They are difficult to earn their living. Therefore, the third reading of the minimum wage was passed on Jul 17, 2010. The law will take effect in the first half of next year and will protect workers to get the pay reasonably.

On the other hand, learning a bitter lesson during the past economic crisis, Hong Kong workers work hard since they are worried that they will be bounced. Moreover, this is a fact; today almost everything depends on machinery or technology rather than workers.

It is less easy for persons who with low skills to find good jobs since they do not have better qualifications or higher education. Actually, finding a satisfying employment now is very competitive whatever who is the middle class or lower such as the young adults, other professions, the person with low education level and the middle-aged workers, etc.

I hope all of the employers to consider their employees’ livelihood. They should be generous to them during an economic boom since their employees were facing the difficult situation with them together during the recent economic crisis. Being a generous and considerate boss, you will have many excellent employees who are loyal to you.

Ex-37 Violence in Today’s World

(Kar) We are luckily living in Hong Kong. It is one of the safest places in the world. Although there intermingle with different people from different nations, they are to live together in peace. There is less racial discrimination since Hong Kong people want peace and respect others.

For example: there were 20 Hong Kong tourists and a tour guide who were hijacked by a gunman, the Philippine National Police who had been dismissed, in Manila, Philippines, on Aug 23, 2010. Yet the Manila Police District SWAT team was so stupid to manage the hostage crisis. Unfortunately, eventually eight hostages were shot dead, four were slightly injured and three were seriously. We felt very sad to learn the news on TV and quite angry with the Manila Police. Even some local employers fried their Filipino helpers to show that how they were wrathful to the Philippine Government. However, the survivor, Lee Ying- Chuen of the Manila bloodbath said we should not angry with Filipinos living and working in Hong Kong since they were also victims of an “incapable government”. On the other hand, other survivors, Mrs. Leung and Mrs. Fu, thanked to Hong Kong citizens’ care and encouraged them living as same as before and should not sad for the past. See! They are very brave, wise, and be tolerance for others. I am proud of them and should learn from them.

Nevertheless, nowadays we still see the war or civil war in other countries such as Lebanon, Iraq and Thailand and so on. People living those places are less safe and suffer from the consequences of corrupt systems of their Governments. The innocent civilians often face hardship that there is less food for them and water is also not clean enough for drink. In the meantime, some Chinese colonies in those countries worry that their properties will be robbed.

If peoples of all nations had wanted peace, the World War One or civil war would not have happened. Also, there would be less violence in today’s world.

Ex-36 Spare the Rod

(Kar)
I wonder whether corporal punishment is a good way to teach naughty children. However, many parents believe that it makes a naughty child into a good one, yet physical punishment is no guarantee of the result. In fact, most naughty children do not improve their behaviour after they have been beaten. On the other hand, some of them are ashamed of scars of the cane on their skins and cover them with sleeves or knee high socks. It makes them to be less confident of the social life.

I remember that when I was in primary 3. The naughty boy, Tom, my classmate, was often tricked with others. He was beaten by our class teacher with a thick ruler after he had done wrong and was sometime punished to stand outside alone during class. Nevertheless, he had not learnt his lesson and kept tricking with others. He even bullied small boys. Therefore, he could not make friends in the class. But he had not improved his behaviour until was in primary 5. He met Miss Lee, his class teacher, who was kind to him with great patience and often explained what he was wrong. As a result, Tom had changed since then. He kindly treated others and never bullied small boys. Eventually, he had many good friends at school and often studied after school together.

I personally believe that training a child with great patience, love and encouragement is very important. Also, it is necessary that adults should not practise corporal punishment on naughty children, and should gently explain that how wrong for them to do instead. I think it is good for them to make the child good.

Ex-35 Oh! What a Holiday!

(Kar) We have good days and bad days in life. However, we should make everyday a good one whatever our lives are easy or hard. And content with the simple basics of life. I believe that doing good things makes a good day; doing bad things makes a bad day. Consequently, we should be wise enough to live every one.

In my opinion, successful people are not always the smartest but have obtained emotional skills. They can be able to recognize and to deal with one’s own emotions. Facing hardship with active attitude, they are often enjoyable and hopeful.

Life is not of all fun. It is necessary for us to face hard circumstances with humour. If we accepted them with philosophy, we would be happier. For example: you are going to hike or do outdoors but it rains heavily. You may feel unhappy about the rain upsetting your plan. On the other hand, farmers are grateful to the rain since it is useful for their crops. If you accept that it is good for the crops, and farmers will have a good harvest, you will appreciate the rain and will have a good day.

It is important that, we should keep a sense of humour facing bad situations or hardship. Enjoy our life whenever.

Ex-34 Spreading the News

(Kar) Through reading of Article No. 34, I can learn the lesson that I should maintain the position of medium on people repeating rumours. Not knowing all the facts, I should not spread the news since it may cause misunderstandings among friends or others.

In the drama of the “Spreading the News”, it is obvious that Jack’s neighour who misunderstood his reply and spread the message without knowing all the facts, even to call the police. Eventually, the policeman ascertained that Jack had not purposed to kill George.

That story seems to be full of exaggerations but it may take place for life. We often act Jack’s neighbor to spread stories or news without knowing all the facts. Not hearing correctly, we repeat rumours that may cause many problems. Therefore, it is necessary for us to spread the news or stories before they were confirmed.

Some of the local newspapers or magazines often exaggeratedly report on news or stories. Their aims are only to attract a great deal of readers. As a result, we should insist the attitude of medium upon all reports.

Ex-33 Honesty is the Best Policy

(Kar) It is true that honest people are more responsible and trustworthy. They are able trusted because have their good reputations. It is easy for them to build a successful relationship with their friends, lovers, spouses as well as their family members.

Not carrying unnecessary stresses in life, honest people are optimistic and relaxed. Moreover, they often get good results for their work and are rewarded by their bosses, business partners and customers. They also make good relationships with their colleagues. Consequently, we should be honest and stick with the principle; otherwise we might be disrespected.

Those dishonest people often lie to others: couples lie to their spouses; children lie to their parents; students lie to their teachers and employees lie to their bosses. They purposed to hide their dishonesty forever. Nevertheless, they would be found out as lies could not hide facts. Finally they were disrespected because had their poor reputations. Actually, most of the dishonest people who carried a great deal of stresses in life since they worried that their immoral behaviour would be detected.

Personally, I believe that honest people are more confident, happier than the dishonest ones. As a result, it is necessary for parents to set up a model of honesty to their children, and teach them should be sincere, ingenuous to everybody. They should remind their children that do not lie to their teachers, seniors, friends and others. If not, their sins will find them out.

Ex-32 The Joys of Reading

(Kar) We can find pleasure in reading, and that it can improve our knowledge: a variety of religions, history, sciences and other countries’ culture and so on. Through reading, the intellect of human can be widened, and improve our writing skills. Therefore, it is good for us to develop good reading habits. We can sometimes read some books just for pleasure such as comics, cartoons and cookbooks etc.

I know that most of the local schools where often held the plan of “Book Report” for their students. The aim was to encourage them, reading outside the school syllabus, broadening their education. Teachers suggested students reading good books as many as possible. It is also an opportunity for them to foster their interests in reading.

Occasionally, I read some books which were about the philosophy of life. They taught us to learn enjoying the simple pleasures of life, appreciate the beauties of nature in the countryside and how to improve our family life. Also, they encouraged us to treasure the relationship of family members, friends, and keeping a sense of humor when we faced hardship.

If we often read good books about real life, we will remember them to accept difficulty with philosophy.
