Ex-20 A Dangerous Place for Young Children

(Kar) What are the causes of child accidents at home?
Many parents are less aware of preventing accidents to cause plenty of child accidents at home. According to Hospital Authority Statistics that there were nearly nine children who were sent to the Accident & Emergency Department or hospital every day between 2006 and 2008. Those child accidents include: drinking detergents or medicine, burns, fall from high buildings and slipping in the bathroom etc. Therefore, parents should be aware of potential hazards at home to prevented accidents with manageable steps, most accidental injuries can be reduced.

Recently, I read about some young children were sent to the hospital since their parents or grandparents who had careless to look after them.

A two-year old boy swallowed baleful of kerosene while playing with his older brother in their grandmother’s room. The three-year old found a plastic bottle under the bed that contained kerosene. Both toddlers mistook the fuel for pop, and the younger brother took a cap full. Their mother had found the toddler vomiting and sent them to the hospital.

Another case a three-year old boy fell to his death from the 18th-floor flat. The boy managed to open the security gate of the flat when the grandmother was cooking. She found that he was missing. She was looking for him and saw him lying unconscious on the fourth-floor podium of the 25-story building. She immediately called police and the boy was rushed to the hospital where he died. This is a fact; it is especially hard for the elderly to take care of active children.

Another there-old girl was left sleeping alone at midnight since her grandmother had gone to see a doctor about a stomachache. She found nobody when she woke up. She climbed out of the flat and was sitting on the extendable canvas canopy above the street. A restaurant owner across the street saw the girl sitting on the canopy at 1:30 am and called police. Fortunately, she was saved, without injury, and was sent to the hospital.

If parents or grandparents had realized to prevent accidents at home, most of child accidents would not have happened.

Ex-19 Superstition, the Root of Fear and Tool of Crime

(Kar) Some parents insisted in choosing the “lucky” date for their children’s marriages and all the rigmarole since they believed superstitions. They hoped that their children would get successful marriages. The young couples complied because they loved them and they had no ideas. However, their marriages might not be successful after having superstition ceremonies, some of them even resulted in divorce. It’s no guarantee of superstition ceremonies.

I occasionally read some cases in newspaper about some housewives or elderly people in Hong Kong who had been cheated money by crooks since they believed superstitions. They thought the crooks who would help their families to become lucky after performing some magic. Actually, it shows they were not wise enough to manage.

Another case about the self- styled Taoist mater, who was a truck driver, was jailed for six years and nine months on Jan 21, 2010 since he had duped the female victim, who was a teen model, into sex with him. He had assured the victim that he would not make her pregnant because those sex sessions were part of a ritual and he would improve her luck and career prospects after the ritual. She agreed with him. Unfortunately, she was pregnant and decided to abort the fetus. It’s so stupid, less mature of her to believe him. Eventually, she left the modeling industry. If the teen model had not believed superstitions, she would not have had a terrible experience.

Ex-18 Superstitions

(Kar) I remember when I was young, my mother did not let me wash hair, sweep the floor on Chinese Lunar New Year’ Day since she believed superstition. She said if I did, I would be unlucky. As a result, she angrily told off me after I had done. However, I don’t agree with her. I am used to washing hair or sweeping the floor on that day now.

Some Chinese people still believe lots of superstitions, such as numbers 14, 24, 40, 58, ordering seven dishes for dinner, giving a clock to someone as birthday gift, and so on, all being considered unlucky.

On the other hand, some Hong Kong people believe that they become lucky after having superstitions ceremonies such as they put up new "fai-chuns" after housecleaning, these "fai-chuns" which include phrases of good health, good luck, good fortune, prosperity, success, progress, during Chinese Lunar New Year. Hoping for good luck in the year ahead, the Buddhists try to be first to place their incense sticks into big trays in Wong Tai Sin Temple after midnight at Chinese Lunar New Year. Also, they believe some certain numbers bring them lucky such as 18, 28, 33, 66 and 99 etc.

In my opinion, we should not depend on superstition. Instead, we should be positive to face difficulties, nothing is impossible.

Ex-17 A Lesson from William Shakespeare

(Kar) This is a fact that there are no “free lunches” for people, who go shopping or spend on whatever they like, to use credit cards. It means that you can still keep buying things with a credit card if you have no money. The banks and finance companies seem quite kind to you. However, you are tempted to spend freely. They only concern about their business. Therefore, you should manage your finance. If not, you may get the debts becoming heavier. It’s bad for people to own plenty of credit cards. It easily causes them to spend on since they do not need to pay back all of bank statements; they can only play off the minimum of cards each month. But they might not know they have to pay the heavier interest.

I read some news about some of debtors who were killed themselves since they hadn’t money enough to repay a great deal of debts. It’s stupid of them to do. Their family members or friends would be so sad. If they had managed their budgets, they would not have chosen selves-murder.

It’s necessary for us to learn how to budget, save money and cut expenses on unnecessary things.

Ex-16 The Lapse of Morals in Modern Life

(Kar) Some of teenagers nowadays are fewer morals such as compensated-dating girls or pseudo models.

Some young girls who are become compensated-dating girls since they need to have money spending on name brands for them. They think it’s safer than to be whores and they can refuse sex trade themselves. However, it shows they are less mature enough. In fact, it’s very dangerous for them to do. Unfortunately, there was a case about the compensated-dating girl, surnamed Wong, 16-year-old, who had been murdered by the client during the immoral sex trade on 26 Apr 2008. It’s quite cruel of the murderer to her. Eventually, he was sentenced to life imprisonment on 2 Aug 2009.

On the other hand, pseudo model image is no good for students. Appearing at the Book Fair, the pseudo models have promoted their risqué “photo album” books since last year. Their behaviours can damage the positive Book Fair image and bother other serious book lovers. Besides, some of teens used to buy books or supplementary exercises here. Now they might instead spend on the risqué “photo album” books. It’s bad for them to own and they might misunderstand about the sexual attitudes. Therefore, parents and teachers should teach teenagers the correct sex education and tell them to refuse buying such publications. Encourage them to build up the positive morals in their lives.

Ex-15 Wealth or Welfare?

(Kar) There are many workers who are overworked and earn less money in Hong Kong. The Legislative Councillor, Emily Lau, recently pointed out 190,000 households under HK$4000 per month such as the middle-aged workers and the person with low educational level or low skills especially.

Nevertheless, on 17 Jul 2010, the third reading of the minimum wage bill was passed with forty-five ayes, one nay and no abstentions. Furthermore, the chief executive will decide the rate of Legislator who votes to accept or reject next month and the law will take effect in the first half of next year.

What caused the minimum wage bill to legislate? It was because a cleaner, surnamed Yim, 75-year-old, who had been offered just HK$7 an hour when working in Monk Kok public toilet nine years ago. He said he needed to work 14 hours and only earned HK$100 per day during in that time. It’s difficult for him to earn his life. However, he had no choice since his son abandoned him and his wife had died. The little amount of salary was not affordable enough for him to rent a room. Therefore, he lived in the small storeroom inside the toilet. It’s quite hard for him to live during in those days.

Personally, I agree with the minimum wage bill to be legislated. Workers would be respected. After all, some employers do become wealthy by overworking and underpaying their ones. Gained more income by their generous employers, workers can improve their living and enjoy doing their jobs. They may even work themselves to death. In the meantime, being fair and generous, employers can easily get more excellent workers who are hardworking and loyal to them. As a result, it’s good for the development of industrial relations and will be less argument in the society.

Ex-14 Road Rage and Other Rages

(Kar) It’s true that Hong Kong’s people are less patient now, especially some of drivers who often suddenly switch the lane during rush hour since they want to overtake the slow car which it is in front of them. However, it’s very dangerous for them to do because it easily causes the traffic accident.

On the other hand, Hong Kong is a very busy city. People usually rush and they are mostly impatient with anything that delays them. Although the new Hong Kong is richer than the old one now, people may be less happy than in the past.

It’s necessary that we should be patient enough to face others or everything. If you took a little time to calm down, you wouldn’t easily get angry. In the meantime, you would feel less frustrated if you held your tempers.

I used to be impatient, now I try to slow down a bit when I go rushing. Also, it’s important that we should calm down to solve problems when we are in difficult situations. If we stayed positive during in hard days, we would have lot of fun or confidence.

Recently, I like the poem very much. I think it may help you how to enjoy your life with less rush or push. It says:

Flowers blossom in spring;
The moon shines in autumn;
The breeze blows in summer;
Snow falls in winter,
It will be the best season of all times if no trivial matters linger in your mind.

Ex-13 Beware of Paedophiles

(Kar) Paedophiles are mostly men. They are often weak in sociability, less confident or difficult to build up the relationship with opposite sex. Therefore, they are usually sex with children because it’s easy for them to get sex drive from the little girls or boys.

It's really dangerous that the ones don’t look ugly. They are often kind to children and treat them with money or gifts. However, some paedophiles are the victims’ teacher, tutor, even are the family members or relative of victims or they have known. For examples: There were two cases about paedophiles in Hong Kong. The first one is Mr. Lam, 49-year-old, who was a tutor. He was sent to the prison for 2.5 years in Nov 1997 since he had sexually molested his student. But he hadn’t learnt his lesson. He still kept being the guilt of pedophilia after he had been discharged from the prison. Unfortunately, five little girls of his students had been sexually molested during March to May of 2007. Eventually, he was sent to the prison for 4 years and 8 months again.

Another one, Chan Hung, 32-year-old, who was a teacher in Tuen Mun district. He was sent to the prison for 49 months by sexual molestation on 18 Jan 2010. It’s quite dreadful behaviour of them to hurt the children. In the meantime, the poor little girls were sexually molested and the terrible experience may affect the development of social life for them when they grow up.

It’s important for parents and adults to teach children staying away from strangers and don’t receive money or gifts from them or others.

Ex-12 Scientific Truth is Infinite

(Kar) It's fortunate that, today, we believe that people who make scientific discoveries. It’s extremely different from before. For example: Over 400 year ago, Galileo Galilei, who was the Italian scientist, realized that the earth is round. However, believing that the earth was flat, the Catholic Church strongly objected since the Bible refers to “the four corners of the earth. In fact, the earth is round. Therefore, we shouldn’t agree to specious claims without scientific proof.

On the other hand, Professor Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist, who discovered: wireless, television and computerization etc, thinks that the whole truth of our universe will be disclosed. It’s quite wise of him to have an interesting idea, and then we need to wait there is real scientific proof. It’s necessary for us to accept which can be confirmed by scientific facts.

Ex-11 Is it Goodbye to our Rickshaws?

(Kar) Rickshaws had been discovered at first in Hong Kong in 1874. They were popular public transport in those days. Therefore, there were over than 3,000 ones and about 8,000 rickshaw-pullers in 1920s. However, rickshaws have been replaced by motor vehicle: buses, trams and taxis after the Second War.

Only four remaining rickshaws were licenced to service since 1980s. Instead they became to service tourists. There was the limited route from old Star Ferry Pier to Statue Square area only. Nevertheless, many visitors took photos sitting in a rickshaw at that time. The owners were less hard to earn money then.

But it’s quite difficult for rickshaw-pullers to earn their living since the new terminal where isn’t convenient for visitors. As a result, the remaining rickshaws may disappear soon, and then we will lose the part of our Hong Kong’ heritage. Eventually, they may be exhibited in the Hong Kong history museum.

(Karina) Thank you very much for Mr. Lau to point out the mistake of mine. It’s necessary for me to be humble. I should do carefully and never make the mistake again.

This is a fact, he didn’t only teach us how to improve our English, and he also reminded us that we should do correctly. Consequently, I’m deeply grateful for his advice. I’ll try to improve the wrong of mine.

(Karina) It’s quite lucky for me to have a good chance sharing with you, my classmates, here.

Being hard-working, I can get a good result since I have a good teacher. It’s extremely kind of him to provide us the English Blog Writing. Therefore, I can often practice here and then my writing skills can also improve. In the meantime, my study habit has changed since then.

I was used to indolence. Instead I am hard-working now. It’s glad that I am successful and get more confidence. As a result, it’s necessary for us to work hard. We may get better result after we did.

In my opinion, if we often practice, we will improve our writing skills and how to use the grammar with a correct way through writing. Besides, it’s a good time for us to study during summer holiday and prepare ourselves for coming school year. Try the best now!
