Ex-31 It’s Everyone’s Responsibility

(Kar) Climate change has become a major challenge of our time and caused extreme weather frequent around the world: snow, hurricanes, floods, melting glaciers, heating and so on.

On the other hand, human burning of fossil fuels, transportation or other greenhouse gases has caused a great deal of emission of carbon dioxides, trees have excessively been hewn down, that is the main cause of global warming. It has also pushed the earth’s environment at risk. Consequently, we should be responsive to save Earth’s resources for our own and future generations.

Above all, we should learn to recycle. For examples: we should reuse paper for copy rather than throwing it away and not use the disposable tools such as bamboo chopsticks, paper glass and plates etc. It can reduce to hew down trees. In the meantime, it is necessary that we should not waste resources: we should switch off TV, light, air-conditioner and fans before go out, and take more public transport instead drive cars, or go on foot, to work or school. Furthermore, the Government should act immediately on the “polluter pays” policy on other fuels for cars usage, legislators should quickly perform the law, before the air pollution becomes even worse.

If we had saved Earth’s resources, the melting of glaciers wouldn’t have swallowed up large areas of land. It has led rising sea levels and will be dangerous to human beings. Therefore, it’s important for us to reduce pollution: air, water, and land pollution, and teach children how to save the environment of our Earth.

Ex-30 A Tragic Result of Discrimination

(Kar) All nations should respect each other whatever people of a different colour: white, light brown, dark brown or black skin. Furthermore, we should make friends with lonely people. It is necessary that we should be understanding, not laugh at their mistakes. Generally speaking, we should sympathize with mentally disturbed persons. If not, sometimes, it may lead to become a tragedy.

In my Book Report Article No. 29, I mentioned that the tragedy of discrimination. It was about a South Korean student, Cho Seung Hui, who had shot dead 32 persons and injured several others at the Technical University in Virginia. All of the victims were his teachers or classmates. He was quite cruel to them, as his classmates were so arrogant and ignored him even to disrespect for his plight. Also, the American students have laughed at him that he did not speak English clearly since at secondary school.

It was less easy for Cho to make friends with others since he was so shy. He was obviously quite lonely and unhappy and felt inferior in America. Scorned by the American students, he was very angry and plotted a massacre to revenge on them. It was the tragic result of discrimination.

In fact, he had suffered from psychiatric problems and agreed to undergo. Yet, it did not help him anything after had done. He wrote essays that he had violent tendencies. Nevertheless, his teachers were not sensitive enough to manage or prevented him to massacre. If they could sense that it was dangerous of him, the tragedy would not happen.

Ex-29 Racial Discrimination

(Kar) In this twenty-first century, we still find that some of the Western countries are racial discrimination. Those people, who have light brown, dark brown or black skins, are often disrespected. It is undoubtedly unfair for those darker-skinned people to live there.

I read of a tragedy of discrimination. It mentioned that a South Korean student who studied in the Technical University in Virginia, U.S.A. He had been scorned by his snobbish classmates during from secondary to University so had planned a massacre to revenge on his teachers and fellow students. Unfortunately, he shot 32 persons. He may also have suffered from psychiatric problems. Feeling inferior in America, he could not make friends easily. It is obvious that he was lonely indeed. If the American students were not racism or treated him with respect, the tragedy would not happen.

On the other hand, sometimes, some invading Western countries pretended to protect their colonies to garrison in other ones. Actually, they purposed to acquire land and resources for themselves from other countries such as Africa or other areas of the world.

In fact, fortunately, we live in the safe city─Hong Kong where is less racial discrimination. Although people live here to intermingle with different nations being, they respect other ones and are tolerant variety of religions: Christianity, Muslims and Buddhism and etc. Moreover, most people who live in peace with their neighbours. Some of them are helping each other.

Ex-28 Saving our Culture and Heritage

(Kar) More than 20 million foreigners, who come from different countries, visit Hong Kong every year. Therefore, it can increase local job creation such as Tourism, Hotel Industry, and Retail Business and so on.

Although Hong Kong is a modern International City, it remains variety of customs: Fire Dragon Dance, Bun Festival, or Dragon Boat Festival etc. Citizens enjoyed those festivals since the Government had held all sorts of events to celebrate during festivals. For examples, there were the annual dragon boat races in Aberdeen during the Dragon Boat Festival. The races commemorated the death of Chinese patriot Qu Yuan. Besides, we could see the annual Bun Festival on Cheung Chau Island where the 15 meter tall steel tower covered in lucky buns and the bun tower climbing competition was very exciting. In the meantime, the parade was also fantastic. People enjoyed where children in colorful costumes supported on poles seem to “float” in the air.

Through festival activities, foreigners realize more Chinese culture or customs. Consequently, we should preserve our heritage, customs, antiquities and some worthy trees or architecture to attract visitors visiting Hong Kong. However, the Government is less sense to preserve its own architecture such as the clock tower at the old star Ferry Pier in Central (it existed for 49 yours) was removed in 2006. Also, the old tree (it existed for 70 years) at Mary knoll Convent School, recently, was destroyed. Most of the citizens, the school’s teachers or students especially, were quite sad for it.

If the Government had struggled to preserve the clock tower and the old tree, they would not have been removed or destroyed. As a result, the Government should endeavor to preserve whatever heritage which is really worthy of preservation for the future generation.

Ex- 27 The Secret of Longevity

(Kar) People in Hong Kong generally are enjoying good health. Therefore, nowadays, they can usually live longer.

According to the Vital statistics of the life expectancy at birth (Male and Female) were captured by the Centre for Health Protection in 2009. It showed the life expectancy at birth for both sexes to live to an average age of 82.2 years. Boys born in 2009 could expect to live 79 years and girls 85 years.

On the other hand, some people, the rich ones especially, hope to get the secret of longevity. However, long or short life sometimes results from one’s family genes. Yet we can usually live longer by taking care of ourselves such as having a positive attitude, emotionally calm, or healthy life-style and so on. Also, we should keep a healthy weight and reduce the number of calories, and doing some exercise, or playing ball games as we like.

If you like to near the nature, you can go hiking, to breathe the fresh air and see the mountain scenery in the countryside, with family members or friends. This activity is useful for you to relax.

I personally, believe optimists who can usually live longer since their lives are healthier, active. They are also happier, more passionate than pessimists. Consequently, we should be optimistic and enjoy ourselves, our life, whenever.

Ex-26 When Does One Become an Adult?

(Kar) Nowadays in Hong Kong, the age for reaching adulthood is eighteen. Young people who can have their adult identity cards and are old enough to vote. However, the age of consent is twenty-one. Personally I agree with the law since it can protect those young couples that they are old enough, responsible, to deal with marriage. If the age for marriage is eighteen, the ones are too young, might be less mature enough, to manage their marriage life. It might cause marital discord, even to separate or divorce.

I wonder how many young people, now the age of adulthood, are sensible enough to know which candidate to vote for? Also, I’d like to know if they take an interest in what is happening in their city or in other countries. Actually, taking an interest in world affairs, young people realize more other countries’ religions, political views, cultures and what is happening in the world. It’s useful for them to form their own opinions. Nevertheless, they should keep open minds judging.

There are some young people who often spend too much time on surfing the net or playing online games. They are usually all day sitting in front of computer and do not have time to talk with their parents or family members. Even some of them are not used to reading news every day. It’s bad for them to develop the relationship with their families, friends or neighbourhoods. They should be concerned about other ones, their city, even in world affairs. It’s good for them to create their social conscience and have more experiences in the adult world.

Ex-25 The Problem of Domestic Violence

(Kar) What was the main cause of domestic violence? The reason was such as marital argument, or managing the children, or one of the family members became addicted to drinking alcohol, gambling and so on. Generally speaking, those spouses or family members were incompatible, thoughtless, less caring for, to cause of domestic violence or family tragedies.

According to the statistics of child abuse, spouse battering and child sexual violence were captured by (CPR) and (CISDSSV) in 2009. The survey of child abuse cases was 993. It included physical abuse 50.7%, neglect 10.3% and child sexual abuse 33.3%. Moreover, it found almost child abusers who were victims’ parents. It’s so sad indeed. They were quite cruel to their children. If those children had not been abused, they would have been happy childhood. In my opinion, being responsible, parents should be loving, care for, kind, to their children and create warming families for them.

Another survey of battered spouse cases pointed out 3,880 (80.7%) victims of physical abuse. They were almost beaten by their husbands. The reasons for battered spouse are numerous: marital argument about each other’s faults or trivial matters, one of loses control of his temper, or poverty and other immoralities etc. Unfortunately, some of the victims committed suicide themselves and forcing young children to die along with them to revenge on their spouses. They were cruel, selfish, to their children since they too loved them. Yet, this is a fact; it’s less wise of them to do so.

If both spouses and family members had tolerated, respected, of different views of other ones, those tragedies in home would not have happened. If they maintained good family life, there would be less of domestic violence. It’s positive for the whole society.

Ex-24 Chinese or English Medium of Teaching?

(Kar) As Hong Kong is an International City. English is commonly used in the commercial world. It’s obvious that the schools where using English as the medium of teaching are more popular than Chinese. Parents believe that if their children study in English, they will have bright future. Yet there is no guarantee.

Actually, it’s so difficult for some students to study in English. They sat through school lessons that may not understand what was being taught, except in Chinese lessons. Some of them became bored. Therefore, they might get the marks less and less. It led them to lost interest to study, even to give up. On the other hand, some students understood in all subjects since the schools used of Chinese as the medium of teaching, except English. They sat through school lessons comprehending all subjects in Chinese, except in their English lessons. Their results were improving. Consequently, they were confident of studies and enjoyed school life.

In my opinion, parents and teachers should suggest their children or students selecting schools where they are fit to study. It’s useful for them to improve their results. If they progress in theirs, they will be interested in all subjects, even to English. In the meantime, teachers should lead students to develop some interests in English: encourage them to speak in English in class, or take part in the English composition contest, or watching more English movies and so on. After all, English is useful in Hong Kong for students to learn as a second language.

Ex-23 Learning from Hardship

(Kar) Life is not all of fun. Yet we can learn useful lessons from hardship. It’s good for us to build up our characters. Let’s be confident enough to face up to whatever difficulties or the unhappiest misfortunes. Being optimistic, we can easily solve problems and manage the adversity.

Experiencing economic crisis, some of us can learn how to budget, save money and cut down on luxuries or unnecessary things, and enjoy the simple satisfaction of life instead. Such as care for our families, or become a volunteer to help people in need, or avoid from the busy city to near the nature for a moment breathing the fresh air and see the mountain scenery in the countryside with family members or friends and so on. If no trivial matters linger on ours minds, we will find that life can be all of fun. As a result, it’s required that we should be enjoyable the life.

We can learn useful lessons from every experience in our lives, whether good or bad, it’s necessary that we should be positive to face. If we are less negative, we will be happier. It’s useful for us to build up a positive life attitude, keep a sense of humour to face hardship. Everything will be wonderful after we had done.

Ex-22 The Two Bears

(Kar) A couple’s marriage ended in divorce. Their marriage is not only damaged; the whole family is also damaged.

Facing their parents’ divorce or separation, the children are so sad and afraid. Also, they may be arranged only to live with one parent. Even some of them can’t keep living with their brothers or sisters together. Their live styles have changed since then. Though they don’t agree with the arrangement, they have no choice. Moreover, they fear for the situation and worry that another parent (who can’t live with them) won’t love them. It may affect the development of emotions of those children and they might fear to marry when they grow up.

On the other hand, both the couple themselves grew up in different families. Their characters or living styles are different from their spouses. It causes them to argue about each other’s faults or trivial matters. It’s no good for them do so. It may affect their married life and may even get divorced.

Therefore, we should love our spouses and children, be responsible for them, and maintained our happy home life.

Being tolerant of different views of our spouses, we should often stick with the Two Bears.

Ex-21The Headaches of Learning English

(Kar) As Hong Kong has changed into a high knowledge based cosmopolitan city. We should learn more foreign languages, such as Japanese, French, English, or mandarin and so on, to improve our knowledge skills. English is commonly used in the commercial world and we can understand most of foreigners.

Nevertheless, English is quite difficult for Hong Kong’s students to learn because it’s totally different from their own language especially learning the tenses. It’s less easy for them to write as there are many different tenses, and must use the correct tense in every sentence so they often fail in writing. Therefore, we should understand that the structure of the sentences in English and analyze them carefully. If not, we may lose out in writing. On the other hand, Chinese characters never change their form of tenses and tense is shown in the context of the sentence.

Through reading, we can realize the English sentence structure and tenses, and then our writing skills can be improved. As a result, we should often read and practise writing more. Eventually, we get mistakes in compositions less and less.

If you often practise, you will get a good result and be confident, even enjoy writing. You may find learning English is not headaches. Instead it is interesting.
