Treasure Island
(Kar) The book I have read is called Treasure Island, retold by Angela Wilkes.
Jim Hawkins helped his mother to run the Admiral Benbow Inn. It was an unusual day for him to meet an old sea captain, Billy Bones. Jim’s life had changed since then. Bones gave Jim a silver coin for looking out for a sailor with one leg and said that he would gave him a coin every month. Bones often looked at the sea with his telescope on the cliffs during his stay in the Inn.
A couple of months later, Black Dog, who sailed with a pirate named Captain Flint, came to find Bones. It was quite frightened for Bones to see him. They fought against with their swords. Black Dog escaped. Several days later, after receiving a message from a blind man, Bones was very shocked to fall to the floor and died.
Jim and his mother found a bag of gold and papers in Bones’ chest. They grabbed them to run out when they heard someone came. Jim decided to take the papers to the hall with a soldier finding Squire Trelawny. Dr. Livesey, who was Squire’s friend, found a map in the papers and it showed where Flint’s treasure was buried. Squire had an idea that they wanted to find the treasure with Jim.
A month later, they hired a ship called Hispaniola to Treasure Island. On the ship, it was horrified for Jim to meet a cook, Long John Silver, who had one leg. On the other hand, Jim was worried about Captain Smollett told him that the whole crew looked tricky. However, there was not enough time for Squire to find another one to replace them.
One night, Jim overheard Long John whispering to a young sailor that he was Captain Flint’s second-in command and asked him to join their pirates. He added that they would kill Smollett and his friends after they got the treasure. Hearing what John said, Jim broke out in a sweat and ran to captain’s cabin to talk everyone there about Long John’s trick. Smollett said that they couldn’t give up and found out who were on their side and be ready to fight.
On Treasure Island, Jim saw Long John killed a sailor for refusing to join the pirates. He was afraid and ran as fast as he could into the forest. There he met Ben Gunn who had been left by his pirate friends. He asked Jim for help him to escape from the island. Meanwhile, Dr. Livesey was looking for Jim with a sailor. They stayed in a logs fort. Jim told Squire about what Long John had done. Next early morning, Long John and the pirates came and asked Squire to give them the treasure map. He did not and fought against them. Finally, they defeated the pirates.
Dr. Livesey looked for Ben with the map. Jim wanted to help him. Walking along the beach, he found a boat Ben Gunn had. He tried to paddle it to Hispaniola. It was very difficult for him to climb onto the deck. He saw Long John’s friend, Israel Hands, on it. He pretended to help Jim sailing the ship to the island. While it was near a bay, Israel Hands held a dagger to attack Jim. Being frightened, Jim climbed up the mast ropes for escape but Israel Hands was scrambling after him. Struck by Hands’ dagger, Jim screamed out and both pistols went off. In the meantime, Hands shouted and dropped into the sea. Jim was safe.
Returning to logs fort. Jim found only Long John and the pirates there. Nevertheless, it was very excited for Jim to see Dr. Livesey next morning. He came to the fort for looking after the wounded pirates. After breakfast, the pirates started to find the treasure with Jim, Finding out the treasure had been stolen, the pirates were very angry and fought against Long John and Jim’s friends. Eventually, Jim’s friend and Long John escaped.
When the boat set sailing for Ben’ cave, Dr. Livesey explained Jim that he had tricked Long John with the treasure map for distracting the pirates. Moreover, he knew Ben had found Flint’s treasure.
Arriving at Ben’s cave, Jim was very glad to see Squire and Smollett. There were a lot of coins, gold bars and jewels. At last, John came back Bristol docks with his share of the gold.
