Ex-26 When Does One Become an Adult?

(Kar) Nowadays in Hong Kong, the age for reaching adulthood is eighteen. Young people who can have their adult identity cards and are old enough to vote. However, the age of consent is twenty-one. Personally I agree with the law since it can protect those young couples that they are old enough, responsible, to deal with marriage. If the age for marriage is eighteen, the ones are too young, might be less mature enough, to manage their marriage life. It might cause marital discord, even to separate or divorce.

I wonder how many young people, now the age of adulthood, are sensible enough to know which candidate to vote for? Also, I’d like to know if they take an interest in what is happening in their city or in other countries. Actually, taking an interest in world affairs, young people realize more other countries’ religions, political views, cultures and what is happening in the world. It’s useful for them to form their own opinions. Nevertheless, they should keep open minds judging.

There are some young people who often spend too much time on surfing the net or playing online games. They are usually all day sitting in front of computer and do not have time to talk with their parents or family members. Even some of them are not used to reading news every day. It’s bad for them to develop the relationship with their families, friends or neighbourhoods. They should be concerned about other ones, their city, even in world affairs. It’s good for them to create their social conscience and have more experiences in the adult world.
